Product configuration to support the sales network and the engineering department



RuleDesigner Configurator can be applied as a product configurator in the design industry and, specifically, in the design of balustrades, railings, stairs, parapets and balconies.

In such a context, it is possible to create configuration services, provided via web, that support the sales network, including large-scale distributors, along the sales phase through the definition of product requirements in an easy and guided mode. The processing of the data and information entered takes place in real time, generating detailed sales documentation, complete with quotation and sales bill of materials.

Therefore, the configurator facilitates the definition of a customized product to any operator, even those who do not have specific know-how on the product or brand to be configured. This allows to overcome barriers to enter into the large-scale distribution by exponentially increasing the opportunities for proposing the company solutions on the market. Also, the ability to give autonomy to the sales network and to automatically generate documentation allows to optimize sales cycles without burdening internal company resources.

RuleDesigner Configurator interfaces with business applications, sometimes driving them, to process data and generate data and documents automatically. With RuleDesigner the product configuration procedures can be contextualized in business processes thanks to an enterprise collaborative portal in charge of workflow management.

Hereunder, an operational workflow:


Creation of a new configuration or update of an existing one

Web access point to create, consult and search sales offers already entered, filtered by customer and vendor.

Selection of the product model

Selection of the railing model with the possibility to consult related technical sheet containing model details (fixings, installation details, etc.)

Definition of the material

Material selection for internal or external use of the railing, default position for the stair’s posts with top or side fixing, number of cables or type of handrail, if the model allows it.

Layout setting

Configuration of the layout by selecting one of the available types on which it is possible to enter dimensions and rotate the geometry. If the installation location is different from the proposed layouts, it is possible to select the layout hand-drawing mode.

Graphic definition

This step represents the heart of the configuration process and allows, through a native web environment of 2D / 3D graphic modeling, to define the installation layout and interact on it by dragging the library shapes into the 2D area.
Among these shapes, the most important is the "Railing" which snaps to the definition lines of the installation layout defining that the user wants to insert a railing on that line. Then, the Railing will be automatically created and displayed in the 3D area.
It is possible to modify the product model directly in the 2d / 3D graphic environment to be able to quickly and effectively show to the customer the appearance of the various railing models inserted in their own layout context.
The library also includes shapes such as walls, doors, windows, columns that allow to define the product positioning context with greater precision.
The configurator not only manages railings positioned on planar surfaces but also those positioned on stairs through the use of a specific shape that allows to configure the staircase (width, dimensions of the landing, number of treads, etc.)

Definition of accessories

On the basis of the configured railing model, the system offers a list of optional accessories such as fasteners, mounting tools, cleaning and maintenance tools.

Calculation of installation BOM

The installation bill of materials (BOM) is calculated by listing all the items and related quantities used to set up the installation. It is also possible to have a preview image of each item and manage discounts. Each distributor and sales partner can define its own sales price list starting from the basic price list issued by the manufacturer.

Creation of the sales offer document

Creation of the sales offer document automatically reporting the configuration ID with the relative barcode, screenshots of the 2D / 3D area, BOM and sales conditions . The information is editable and customizable for different individual store that will access the configurator.
The system allows you to review the offers with traceability of the changes made.
